History

ECIMAT is the University of Vigo´s Marine Research Centre. It was inaugurated in 2006 in response to the marine vocation of the University of Vigo, one of the leading institutions in marine research in Spain.

Since 2006, ECIMAT has grown from a research support facility to a Research Centre that aggregates all the capacities in marine science of the University of Vigo. These capacities, complemented by ECIMAT´s technical and management structure, provides the perfect environment to promote excellent research, transfer knowledge to society and to internationally project the Marine Research carried out in the University of Vigo.

ECIMAT is one of the five Research Centers from all fields of knowledge recognized as "Galician Singular Research Centres" by the Regional Government through the "Excellence in Research (INUGA)" program from the Regional Council of Culture, Education and Universities that is cofunded by the European Union through the ERDF Operational Program Galicia 2014-2020.

ECIMAT is one of the two stations that integrate the Spanish National Node of the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC; www.embrc.eu) and represents the University of Vigo in the European Marine Research Network (Euromarine; http://www.euromarinenetwork.eu).

Mission and Research

ECIMAT´s mission is to promote excellence, increase the impact into society and promote international collaboration, in marine science.

ECIMAT´s research priorities relate to:

Biodiversity and Ecology
Ocean Observation and Global Change
